The big question was how to depict this brilliant surgeon? In his operating gown, in his suit, or in his ermine for the House of Lords? I actually began the painting of Ara in his operating gown. Very unusually, after the first sitting, I decided that this was not how I wanted to portray Ara, so we kept the background and replaced the gown for the suit.
